If you hold on for dear life...

I meet with 3 other gals every Friday for Bible study. The thing I love about it so much is that we take a study for a springboard and then we all discuss how it's playing out in our lives. The discussions often take us in a direction I never imagined, but it always ministers to our hearts.

Yesterday the subject of fear came up. We talked about Phil. 4:6-7 and what a comfort it is. In fact one of the gals used this as her "life verse" and wrote it on her mirror as a reminder every day.

Phil 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
NIV

Such good news...bring it to God!
There is nothing like His peace.

Then we talked about Psalms 91. This one has been a lifeline for me in times of worry and fear. I used to struggle with fear about my children. I was tormented with thoughts of them being hurt. But learning this verse and choosing to believe it...set me free.

The whole verse is powerful, but here is a short portion from the Message Bible.

You who sit down in the High God's presence, spend the night in Shaddai's shadow,
Say this: "God, you're my refuge.
I trust in You and I'm safe!"
That's right—He rescues you from hidden traps,
shields you from deadly hazards.
His huge outstretched arms protect you—
under them you're perfectly safe;
His arms fend off all harm.

And I love the ending of Psalms 91:

"If you'll hold on to me for dear life," says God,
"I'll get you out of any trouble.
I'll give you the best of care
if you'll only get to know and trust me.
Call me and I'll answer, be at your side in bad times;
I'll rescue you, then throw you a party.
I'll give you a long life,
give you a long drink of salvation!"

I love that!
If you hold on for dear life...

I love the picture that paints. Of someone that recognizes that nothing and no one else is a reliable source of safety. He is the One we hold on to for dear life.

Now imagine someone...holding on for dear life to a bottle or drug, or their money, or even another person...there's no security in that.

We were created to hold on to Him.

I love the verses you shared today. Isn't it true that if anybody lets go, it's us, not God. I love to know that He IS there all the time.
We are so lucky. :)

I was just on the blog http://leliachealey.blogspot.com/ and she is starting an online Bible Study using the book 'An Untroubled Heart....finding a faith that is stronger than all my fears' by Micca Campbell
It sounds really good and certainly touches on your topic today.
Have a great day.

When I read that verse again (the last one I used) I thought...I'm going to have to use that phrase- I need a drink! But of course I mean a long drink of salvation!

Your comments are enjoyable to read. I create jewelry with life verses and I see many women asking for these verses. I too pasted my life verse on my mirror, carried a copy in my purse, and pasted it on the mirror- THAT's how we know it is our life verse! The verse is so meaningful and important, we want it before our eyes daily.

FaithApproved.com is giving away one of my bracelets for free, so you may want to check it out.

Blessings from California.

So true! I've been battling "fear" over these past weeks and months, and the two passages you mentioned, along with a few others have been lifesavers to me!

I keep thinking about something you wrote a while back about choosing to either "freak out" or "faith out", and I've realized that we can't trust God and fear at the same time. We're either doing one or the other. I so want to be a woman who "faiths out!"

I have lots of your posts to catch up on. Haven't been blogging much lately, but hope to be back more frequently in the near future. Blessings to you, Sue... Jennifer

Thank you for this post. The Lord used it in my heart right NOW. I am having a battle with the enemy about my sister who has made all the wrong choices in life and in essence has destroyed it for the most part. I know this is all of her own doing and it seems almost everything I read tells me that all I can do for her is to pray. IF she won't bow the knee to Him, there is no true help for her. This will be one of those verses that I will say over and over to myself when the enemy starts his attacking and trying to distract me from my life. Thank you Sue, your posts have been used greatly in my life the short time I've been reading you. Blessings on you and your sweet family.

I went to a conference where Noel Piper was the guest speaker, and she used Psalm 91 as her text. I helped me to feel less anxious about my children and my husband after hearing her speak. I'm a worrier, but now I just remember that passage, and I let go of the worry and hold on to God.
