I received a call the other day from a friend that locked themselves out of their house. I happened to have access to a spare key and I brought it to them.
I watched them go to the door, put the little key into the lock and open it. I couldn’t help but think about how interesting it is that such a tiny thing- a 2 inch key- can make all the difference.
Sure, you could force your way into the house, but then you end up with damage that will need to be fixed. Instead, my friend sat outside and waited for me to bring the key so that they could enter their home.
I thought about how marriage is similar.
There are certain “keys” to a happy and strong marriage and without them, you really never enjoy all that “home” truly is.
I believe that one of the most important keys is one that I have touched on over and over, but I am going to go there again because if you are like me, you need constant reminders.
That key is humility.
Humility is the key that opens a closed heart.
Being a giver instead of a taker.
Doing things “their way” instead of your way.
I’m not talking about gritting your teeth and saying, “yes dear.” I’m talking about true humility. Truly esteeming others above ourselves.
HUMILITY
Humility in the spiritual sense is an inwrought grace of the
soul that allows one to think of himself no more highly than he ought to think

Romans 12:10-11
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.

The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom,
and humility comes before honor

Ps 25:9
He guides the humble in what is right
and teaches them his way.

Col 3:12-13
Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
NIV

"God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble."

Glad to hear you're doing better. I'm taking a blogging break this week but still wanted to stop and read your Two shall become one post- and I'm glad I did, as always!
Humility is a very effective key in all relationships!
sheila
Wow all that from a little key. God sure is using you to get these lessons to meet us right where we are. Thank you. I am glad you are feeling better.
Blessings,
Linda
A much needed reminder dear friend! I'm glad the keys to life and marriage are found in the Word. Thanks for sharing that with us!
Sheila,
Glad you took a break from your break! Thanks.
Linda,
Thanks, that is so sweet of you.
Susan,
Amen!
Sue, happy to hear your doing better, I am still praying for you:) Great post, humility can be hard for some people, pride can ruin a marriage.
Staying humble:)
Deb
Thanks for the prayers Deb. I am sleeping better, but the numbness has not gone away.
Happy and relieved to hear you are doing better. I've missed ya.
Awww that is so sweet of you!
Thanks
Once again, something I need to hear tonight. Humility. Hmmm. I almost forgot the meaning of the word. Thanks for the thought-provoking post.
On a side note, what do you think about the New Living translation of the Bible?
I think this is one of the most important keys in a marriage, friendship and even with our children. Thanks for this beautiful example and reminder.
Scarlet,
Thanks. I like the NLT and use it often!
I will use the verses and the key for good and not bad, a challenge I do those well. The results of living in God’s will are very beautiful when we surrender to him and be humble.
just stopping in to say hello. It's been awhile since I popped in. Ive been busy with lots of "stuff"!
I always appreciate what you share, and love your heart!
I pray you are doing okay.
How is your pain???
Great thought!
Humility is a hard one especially when you are a "strong willed child" like myself, but God has continued to show me that Humility draws me closer to Him!
