Our Conquering King...a servant

ipod
itunes

i-i-i

Toby Keith says it …. “I want to talk about ME”!

As a worship leader it was easy to notice that the largest file in the music folder was the letter “I”. I used to search for songs written specifically about Him and not how “I” feel about Him.

Phil 2:3-4
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain
conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
4 Each of
you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of
others.
NIV

I believe that so much of our own inner turmoil comes from thinking about situations and how they relate to US. Instead of putting ourselves in the place of Jesus who had every right to act like the conquering King that He was, but instead He became a servant.

Phil 2:5-7
5 Your attitude should be the same as that of
Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality
with God something to be grasped,
7 but made Himself nothing,
taking the
very nature of a servant,
NIV

This is an incredible challenge. It certainly doesn’t come easy for me. Make myself NOTHING?? ~sigh~ I have a long way to go!

But OH! The freedom of dying to ourselves!

The whole chapter of Philippians 2 speaks powerfully to this subject, I encourage you to check it out.

So true, there is such liberty, such freedom in a lifestyle of servanthood.

Great post...all the I's in our society - how allegorical to the luciferian speech 'I will ascend, I, I, I'... Yuk!

I sooo love being encouraged in my faith through your blog, Sue. This "i i i" message is timely. Thank you for sharing it. And I have a most appropriate award waiting for you at my blog. It's a rare award that focuses not you you, but on what you do for Christ. You immediately came to mind.
Blessings,
~Toni~

Oh Yes Sue I like songs written because God not my feelings about Him.I love the old hymns and spirituals. Sime of the modern day songs are like Sunday school songs.

Wonderful post Sue. May I say, that "I" needed that? Thank you.

P.S. I've noticed that about some worship songs too. Notice the difference in the old hymns, (I love the sound of the contemp. stuff), but the words are different, they're centered on Jesus.

May I learn to be more Christ centered...

You are so right...we are "man-centered" even in our worship oftentimes, instead of "God-centered"

Your post makes me think of those horrible t-shirts I see kids wearing that say, "It's all about me!" Huh?

It's never about us...it's all about Him! Thanks for your insight today!

Amrita,
Unfortunately it's so true.
However, I do love many of Hillsong's songs.
They tend to draw my heart to His throne. Also a current favorite of mine, Revelation Song by Kari Jobe band. And Shannon Wexelberg's Faithful God- LOVE it!!

I appreciated what you wrote about the "i" in music. I think it is a little bit sad that so many churches are throwing out the hymns as so many of them are rich in doctrine and magnify God. You really don't see that in the newer stuff...I don't mean to say there is nothing good that is new, because there is...but I do think that much of it reflects where we are now days...focusing on "i"...I love how you share that you would look through the music to find songs that focused on God! Good job!

I KNOW you are being serious here, but I just had to share this link. It's one of those funny b/c it's so sadly true things...

That is why I love the old hymns. So many have so many wonderful stories behind them. Like..."it is well with my soul" . Thank you again for sharing with us. :D

Fabulous post - thank you!

This is so very true. It is very difficult to not get caught up in this considering the society we live in. The challenge is to teach this to our children. They are surrounded by so many more "i"s than we ever were.

Sue this reminded me of a post on Bob Kauflin's blog I read during the summer.
He talks about objective, subjective and reflective worship songs.

Objective lyrics tell us something true about God that helps us know him better.

Subjective lyrics express responses to God such as love, longing, conviction, or adoration.

Reflective lyrics describe what we’re doing as we worship God.

You can read the blog post here if your interested

I love Phil 3:15 and if in any of this you have a different attitude, our good God will show it to us. Loved what you said about our Conquering King who lived as a Humble Servant! I love your so evident big heart for your Humble King who came not to be served but to serve us all. You so bring us all to God!

Sharon, Thanks for the link, I will check that out. I think there is a place for all those in worship as long as there is balance.
Know what I mean? I've been in services where all the songs are about us and what He can do for me, that gets old, I want to go deeper than that.
But I have been blessed at different times by those kinds of songs and they come back to me in times of doubt or struggle.

Bev,
I just love you!!!

You know, I favor songs that speak praise directly to him, and not so much about him, although I don't think there's anything wrong with those songs, either. Your "iii" is relevant and relatable. Nice post!
